CREC’s Allison Discusses Georgia’s Cost of Living for NPR Audiences
August 12, 2015Jennie Allison, who helps manage the quarterly Cost of Living Index (COLI), joined a panel of economists at National Public Radio on July 14 to discuss the cost of living in metro Atlanta and how that compares to other national markets. As part of the discussion, Ms. Allison talked about how data that is collected for the index helps provide a useful and reasonably accurate way to compare consumer cost differences between urban areas. Specifically, she focused on the cost of living in the seven areas COLI examines in Georgia and discussed how that compares to other markets such as McAllen, Texas.

The Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER), an association managed by the Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness (CREC), developed COLI. COLI is a U.S.-focused cost-of-living product that identifies key determinants of an area’s cost of living. Based on an econometric model, COLI is the most reliable source of city-to-city comparisons of key consumer costs available anywhere, and its data is recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the President’s Council of Economic Advisors.
