Hawaii Paradise Tax

In collaboration with Rising Tide Economics, CREC conducted economic research in the preparation of a white paper on trends in the relative wages, taxes, and cost of living in Hawaii (and particularly Honolulu) compared with other major metropolitan areas. The project sought to test the hypothesis that there is a “paradise tax” that impacts livability residents and workers in Hawaii. CREC gathered 36 years of data on home values, wages, benefits, and estimated taxes for Honolulu and three comparable U.S. cities to provide a city-to-city comparison of the relative take-home pay for a typical full-time employee.
